Despite considerable professional regulation in the industry, there is no mandatory business standards regulation of occupational health. Addressing this issue and forming a body able to administer such regulations was one of the primary reasons for the formation of COHPA as a trade body; members wanted to be seen as responsible providers, actively working towards best business practice.
COHPA has set a number of business standard requirements that cover both ethical and service provision considerations. Meeting these standards is a mandatory condition for continued membership and enables the association to be seen as a safe place from which to choose a provider and a body of whom questions may be asked.
At present COHPA is not a regulatory body. Any standards approved will be intended as guidelines to help providers to develop self-regulating systems. However; it is the firm intention of the founding members of COHPA that the association will, as it grows in stature and reputation, develop the COHPA Business Standards Service (CBSS) to offer arbitration and auditing where requested and as a means of ensuring adherence to COHPA's business standards policies.
